19-year-old Long Beach native, Charlie McAvoy, logged over 24 minutes of ice time in his NHL debut for the Boston Bruins on Wednesday (4/12) night. McAvoy proved why he was the 14th overall pick in the 2016 draft as the Bruins earned a 2-1 victory of the Senators in Game 1 of the playoffs. Game 2 will be aired Saturday, April 15th at 3pm on NBC. “Loved ones gathered at the Puerto Rican surf spot Marias on Saturday for the first of what will be several memorial paddle-outs honoring Brian Ward — a 58-year-old retired Long Beach, New York, firefighter who’d recently relocated to Puerto Rico. Ward died while surfing in the Rincon area on Monday, March 6th, apparently from drowning, possibly after suffering a heart attack.”
Long Beach native, Charlie McAvoy, helped lead Team USA to a 5-4 win over Team Canada yesterday at the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship. Charlie was named the US Player of the Game after netting the first goal for the US in the second period and then adding an assist in the third. Another Long Islander, Adam Fox from Jericho, tallied three assists for the US. McAvoy was also named to the Media All-Star Team. In an article published last week, the Herald named Long Beach locals Miguel Rodriguez and Isaiah Bird the 2016 People of the Year. Isaiah, born with no legs, met Miguel after moving from Florida to Long Beach. The two have been inseparable ever since. Their story has been featured on ESPN and on BBC. Congrats to these local heroes!
On Tuesday, Will Skudin competed amongst the wold’s best big wave surfers in the inaugural World Surf League’s Nazaré Challenge. The event was part of the Big Wave Tour and was the first ever paddle-in event to take place at the famous Nazaré. Will was one of 24 surfers invited to compete and he did not hold back, as indicated by the video replay. Congrats to Will on being part of history!
